Closed Casket: A New Hercule Poirot Mystery (Hardcover)
Lady Athelinda has gathered together an interesting array of people for the weekend on her estate. Her daughter and son and their spouses, her invalid secretary and his nurse, her lawyer and two men she’s never laid eyes on before…Inspector Catchpool of Scotland Yard and none other than Hercule Poirot himself (thus an interesting weekend is made)! However neither detective knows precisely why they were invited by this celebrated childrens author invited them! Until Poirot comes up with a theory, a theory which bears fruit, with an unexpected twist even he didn’t see coming!
I don’t want to give away too much of the plot here - but Sophie Hannah Does an OUSTANDING job with this entry into the Poirot Canon!
When I begun this book I’d just finished the 13 Clues For Miss Marple and a whole string of Elizabeth Daly’s so I was in a Golden Age frame of mind. And did she deliver! Her setting is perfect, a small-ish house party where evryone has a motive & opportunity. Then Hannah weaves in Shakespeare into the plot seamlessly – just as Christie did herself any number of times and this addition really made this book shine – it is very clever! Plus Poirot as always is his clever self with a foil worthy of his deductive genius! Plus it has a bit of blood in it – but the bloody violence doesn’t exceed that which was found in Hercule Poirot’s Christmas – it adds a nice bit of balance to the mystery. All and all the plot really works and feels like a Golden Age mystery Christie would write!
The Monogram Murders Hannah’s first Poirot novel was good but Closed Casket is GREAT! I really cannot say enough good things about this book. And I would highly suggest this mystery to anyone who enjoys reading Poirot or great classic mysteries!— Amber
The world's most famous detective returns in this ingenious, stylish, and altogether delicious mystery from the author of the instant bestseller The Monogram Murders ("I was thrilled" -- Gillian Flynn).
"What I intend to say to you will come as a shock..."
With these words, Lady Athelinda Playford -- one of the world's most beloved children's authors -- springs a surprise on the lawyer entrusted with her will. As guests arrive for a party at her Irish mansion, Lady Playford has decided to cut off her two children without a penny . . . and leave her vast fortune to someone else: an invalid who has only weeks to live.
Among Lady Playford's visitors are two strangers: the famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, and Inspector Edward Catchpool of Scotland Yard. Neither knows why he has been invited -- until Poirot begins to wonder if Lady Playford expects a murder. But why does she seem so determined to provoke a killer? And why -- when the crime is committed despite Poirot's best efforts to stop it -- does the identity of the victim make no sense at all?
Addictive, ferociously clever, and packed with clues, wit, and murder, Closed Casket is a triumph from the author whose work is "as tricky as anything written by Agatha Christie" (Alexander McCall Smith, The New York Times Book Review).
